Exclusive with Precious Paula Nicole
Welcome to Spill The Tea, Precious Paula Nicole! To start, when did you discover that you wanted to do drag?
It dawned to me about 12 years ago. My ex-partner was already a drag queen then whilst I was a backup dancer for her. I can't remember exactly what happened, but I remember feeling like I wanted to do more and I wanted to explore something different. That's when I started to borrow my ex's make up, costumes, etc and the rest is history!
How did it feel to be selected for the very first season of Drag Race Philippines?
It felt surreal. I honestly never expected it. I have been getting ready for this for so long and I was just really happy that Drag Race is finally here in the Philippines!
Of course everyone wants to win but when all the queens had entered the werkroom on the first day, did you think you would make it all the way?
No, never. I came to the competition only wishing not to go home first! That was it. All I wanted was to enjoy the experience, spread happiness, showcase my talent and share my heart to everyone. Making it all the way really came as a surprise and I am still in awe of how much love, support and growth I got throughout my journey.
Was the competition/show what you expected?
No, It was better than I expected. It’s been the best highlight of my life so far.
When we sat down with your sister Vinas Deluxe she said you were hesitant to apply for the show, why was that?
Well, two things. Firstly, because I know I didn't have enough means or resources and I didn't want to misrepresent my drag. Secondly, I had just finished another competition a year before Drag Race Philippines and I didn't feel like I was ready to go through the same journey again. I wasn’t whole yet at the time and I still hadn’t recovered completely from the previous competition I joined. My heart wasn't ready, but when Viñas talked to me and I realised just how big an opportunity this is, I knew I just couldn’t miss it. So there, let's all thank Viñas for pushing me. Lol!
What was it like getting to compete with some Queens that you already had a strong bond with?
I did my best not to feel like I was competing against my sisters and I'm glad that I never felt they were competing against me, too. As I mentioned, I just wanted to enjoy the experience and that's how I approached everything on the show.
What do you hope to achieve or do during your reign?
Shout-out time! What queer performer deserves a shout from you and why?
Shout-out for everyone! Shout-out to my family and friends! Shout-out to those kind-hearted, talented, unique Queens in the Philippines and across the world!
