RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 Review: Episode 6
The episode starts with the queens coming back into the were room after Amanda Tori Meeting got sent home by Q. Immediately, the queens are throwing shade at each other. Q and Xunami quarrelled in Untucked, because Q said two queens who should be eliminated, Amanda and Xunami. Also, Plane Jane announces that from onward now she wants to be ‚nicer‘, we will see how this will turn out!
As a mini-challenge, each of the queens dances flamenco with a partner, which is a bit of a random challenge especially as some of them never danced flamenco before. It ends with Rupaul and Charo dancing together, hopefully, there was music playing in the studio while recording this. The challenge this week is that the queens have to create a look for themselves and a mini version of that for a doll. Last week when the challenge was announced, it seemed that it would only be about creating a doll, which by itself doesn’t necessarily has a lot to do with drag. Now it makes sense, as it is just basically a design and sewing challenge.
Some girls are struggling, like Mhi’ya, who receives a lot of help from Saphira, Plasma’s concept gets laughed at, Nymphia has no inspiration and goes around annoying the others and Plane Jane is unhappy with the fabric she ended up with. Despite saying earlier that she’ll change, she then goes up to Geneva trying to snatch some of her fabric by basically saying she won’t be able to sew what she has in mind anyway. She is one shady diva, but you have to give it to her, her attitude is just so funny! Either she has no awareness of her behavior or she knows exactly what she’s doing. Geneva ends up snatching some of the same blue fabric later, so in the end, she, Plasma and Plane Jane all have looks made from the same fabric. None of them seems too alarmed about it though.
While getting ready for the main stage, the girls share some stories about their time growing up. Q mentions that she grew up struggling financially, sometimes not being able to eat and how chewing to do drag instead of pursuing a career left her feeling guilty. It gives an insight into why it has been so frustrating for her to be at the top but not snatch the win.
Plane Jane also shares how growing up, her feminine side was frowned upon and that her parents think of drag as worthless. She reflects that this is a part of why she is so insensitive about other people’s feelings sometimes. In the confessional, she even says how her deep-rooted insecurities are really hard to shake. What a thing to share with the world!
Sapphira ends up using her immunity portion, which doesn’t seem to taste nice and the saved girls disappear backstage.
Q finally wins a challenge and the girls are all visibly happy for her, a cute little moment! Geneva and Mhi’ya end up at the bottom for having the worst looks. However, most of the girl’s looks in this challenge weren’t outstanding, Nymphia and Dawn’s were nice and obviously Q’s but the rest was kind of disappointing.
In the lip sync, Mhi’ya can finally show off the moves she’s been talking about the whole season and in contrast to her look, she did not disappoint. She finally sends Geneva home on her 3rd time of being in the bottom.
Next week, the queens are doing a musical, which will be exciting to see as there hasn’t really been a singing and dancing challenge yet, other than the girl group challenge. Hopefully, none of them makes the mistake of wearing an unstyled synthetic wig!
