RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 Review: Episode 3

Episode 3 begins with the long-awaited encounter between the two groups of queens. Tensions run high as each group considers themselves superior. This sets the stage for an intriguing dynamic, as this season's overarching tension revolves around the queens' relationships with each other, a theme established by their initial group division in the first two episodes. This arrangement also affords the audience an opportunity to focus more on individual queens, ensuring everyone receives ample screen time.

As the queens face off and introduce themselves, it's revealed that Morphine and Plain Jane are drag sisters. Tension arises between them when Morphine expresses surprise at Plain Jane's victory in the talent show. The rarity of queens from the same drag family within a single season adds further potential for conflict and drama. As conversation ensues, it becomes evident that this season is rife with shade! With the merging of the groups, the influx of characters becomes somewhat overwhelming, transitioning from 7 queens to 14 on screen.

The winners of the previous two episodes receive their immunity tokens, introducing a twist: they can either save themselves or another queen. This twist fosters alliances and tensions among the contestants.

In this week's challenge, the queens are tasked with presenting two looks themed around "mothers" and creating a ball look from menswear. This departure from the norm of using random items adds a new dimension to the competition.

Amidst the shade, there's a touching moment between Q and Ru, where Q shares her struggles with familial acceptance of her drag persona. Ru offers words of understanding and support, addressing a common struggle within the queer community.

The episode reveals that the queens will once again rate each other, determining the tops and bottoms. While entertaining, this feature may become repetitive over time.

The previous week's ratings are unveiled, causing concern for Plain Jane, who fears her strategic gameplay may be exposed. However, only the ranking order within each group is revealed, sparing her for now. Plain Jane's attempts to deceive Nymphia about her low ranking further cement her as the season's villain.

Conversely, Nymphia is portrayed as a sweetheart, striving to make connections with her fellow queens. Her victory in the challenge, with a unique and stunning look featuring 3-dimensional ties, is well-deserved.

On the flip side, Hershii's lackluster looks land her in the bottom two alongside Genevar. Despite her financial sacrifices to compete, Hershii is eliminated, marking the season's first departure.

In the upcoming episode, the remaining queens will tackle an acting comedy challenge. The anticipation is high as they strive to continue their journey in the competition.
