RuPaul's Drag Race Season 14 Episode 10 Review
I’m back, back, back again with a Rucap of Episode 10! It’s the Snatch Game! Perhaps the most iconic main challenge in the entire franchise. Every season fans eagerly await the Snatch Game episode, where front runners are cemented and those who won’t make it to the end are foreshadowed...or at least that’s what most people think! This episode was very interesting and it will definitely go down in the history books...for all the wrong reasons.
Starting off the episode, we get another Daya Betty moment where she really lets her competitive nature get the better of her. I think she’s starting to get in her head and projecting her own frustrations onto the other girls. This is definitely not the way you want to play the game, especially as we’re nearing the final four and the queens need to be fully focused on themselves! However, I do think Daya is getting the short end of the stick production wise, firstly being likened to Crystal Methyd and now having a villainous character arc! That’s TV for ya!
This episode had my favourite mini-challenge of the season, the queens had to make quick garments out of coloured bubble wrap and it was so CAMP. My favourite look came from Bosco and Jorgeous, who struck the right balance of fun and fashion! Rightfully so, Bosco snatched the mini-game win!
Time for the Snatch Game! Let’s get the ratings underway
Coming up first, it’s Deja Skye as Lil’ Jon. If you’ve watched the episode this should come as no surprise. Deja was the only decent one out of the lot. She captivated me with her mannerisms and absolutely ridiculous characterisation. She was over-the-top but also worked with RuPaul very well, which ended up producing a very balanced and nuanced performance.
Then rest are going to fall in no particular order, because they were equally as underwhelming!
Willow Pill went for Drew Barromore which was...a choice! I think it works on paper, because Drew is quirky and can be quite comical. However, Willow took the game too seriously and her answers were uninspired. This menat that she wasn’t able to captivate RuPaul and, well....it was meh!
Lady Camden chose William Shakespeare which I was beyond excited about! I think there is so much potential. Shakespeare can be done in such a comical way, with references to his plays and dirty jokes delivered in a posh voice. Lady Camden just didn’t have the material to really go beyond a very basic impersonation of the screenwriter.
Angeria went with perhaps the most bizarre choice.... Tammie Brown, as in the iconic drag legend. I don’t think Angeria fully personified Tammie, instead she chose to do repeated mannerisms which came across as weird and unprogressively. The iconic lines and jokes were missing, and I felt incredibly underwhelmed by her performance especially.
Daya Betty chose Ozzy Osbourne and I believe she looked exactly like him, it was uncanny. Unfortnately, she left Ozzy at the looks, because I didn’t get much originality or nuance with her performance. She seemed to copy Bosco’s answers and offered no real laughing material.
Jasmien Kennedy went for Betsy DeVos who I had never heard of. The problem was that Jasmine didn’t do a good job at adapting Betsy to snatch game, she stuck with one tone and didn’t evolve or transform.
Bosco chose Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow who, once again, I had never heard of. I appreciated Bosco’s performance but her monotonous tone and lack of jokes made her performance quite difficult to digest...It wasn’t an easy watch, which never leads to a good snatch game performance.
Jorgeous was perhaps the most invisible for me, given the fact that I didn’t even realise she was playing the game! She chose to impersonate Ilana Glazer, another fabulous personality that I had never heard of, and Jorgeous didn’t do a great job in introducing the character to me.
With all that said and done, let’s go onto the runway. This week’s theme was Holy Couture!
This week, Willow Pill took my top spot purely for the uniqueness of her outfit. Although it didn’t really give off the essence of holy couture, Willow executed a great look that was fully realised and delivered.
Jorgeous and Bosco should both get an honourable mention as there looks were clean, precise and well executed. Although a tad bit on the basic side, they both delivered safe runways after a very tragic snatch game.
Jasmine’s look had the potential to be at the top, but then she compared her outfit to Iris Van Harpen. The look automatically felt a lot cheaper and poorly executed...sorry not sorry. The intention was there but the actual garment could have been constructed to resemble the famous designer’s work a lot better.
Daya and Angeria both had average looks for me, nothing too crazy but I felt they could have pushed the category a bit more beyond what they gave. Daya did not need such high heels, which ended up sabotaging her runway. Angeria served church drag which has been done plenty of times before on that same stage, I’m looking for more!
Unfortunately, Deja and Lady Camden had the worst looks this week. Deja’s armour looked evidently like plastic or cardboard, she could have worked a bit more on making it look realistic. I also lost her shape a bit with the abundance of flowy fabric, and the wig was not giving what it was supposed to be. Lady Camden came out with a cute Spice Girls moment but, there was nothing holy or couture about it! I did not live!
This week, the girls were grilled for their performance on the Snatch Game and Rupaul revealed that, with the exception of Deja, next week the girls would all lip-sync in a smackdown La-Laparusa! I agree that Deja deserved the win and I would definitely love to be in her position as she can relax for a week and enjoy the show!
