Interview - Ann Phetamine
Ann Phetamine, long time no speak! We first met at the after party to the Icon Awards back in 2015 where Conchita Wurst performed and I have loved watching you grow since. But first, what got you into Drag?
I have always wanted to be a performer ever since I was young I was the first person at every audition and always wanted the lead role. I found drag and I became absolutely infatuated I couldn’t stop watching YouTube videos, Facebook videos, all that stuff but then I just decided one day I’m gonna get a wig and some heels and try this out and the rest has been a sinking slope into absolutely madness and glamour.
How did you choose your Drag name?
My name comes from 2 different kinds things, I’m a very high energy performer and it’s common knowledge my name is a play on a certain type of upper, I also grew up as a wee metal fan I loved the band cradle of filth and nymphetamine was my absolute jam.
How would you describe your Drag style?
My drag is mostly just being a pretty idiot on stage haha. I love performing taking serious songs and making them funny and making people laugh, I love looking like the most glamorous idiot in the room, kinda inspired by a lot of gothic alternative fashion a lot of black a lot of glitter and a lot of hair to whip around.
You are based in Glasgow, what do you think makes Scottish Queens shine?
Scotland in general has some of the best entertainers in the world in my opinion there so many queens /kings and things that I’m absolutely in awe of from all over the country. We are so diverse in our drag styles aswell if you think of a drag style there’s a queen from Scotland that’s mastered it.
What emoji describes your Drag?
Ohh my emoji is probably the silly wee ghost 👻👻👻
What does being a Drag Queen mean to you?
I loved being a drag queen as a young kid I had so much energy and so much drive to show exactly what I wanted to do. I never really got anywhere as a kid and I had a moment where I was really unsure of what I wanna do with my life, but the success I’ve had from drag has made me realise that I am a star and the world is gonna see it.
What is your go to lip sync song?
I have a lot of stupid comedy mixes I love doing. My favourite one is a mix about a John Cena prank call mixed with call me I love performing it.
Do you have a ritual when getting ready?
I actually sit and listen to horror stories on YouTube as I get ready I have no idea why but it just gets me in the zone haha. Usually with a wee vodka beside me and a fag ready to be smoked once I’m finished my face and prepare myself for the daunting task of getting into body.
When on stage what do you love most about it?
Ohhh 110% the attention hahaha I know that probably sounds a little bit shallow but I do absolutely love it, I love making people laugh I love making people scream I have that little wee flutter in my gut when someone tells me they really enjoyed my performance.
How has Covid changed the way you do Drag?
I feel like I have become a lot more creative aesthetically working on costumes, looks and makeup my main job before this was all stage performances and I’m not able to do that at the moment so I’ve been doing a lot of work on creating outfits and trying to really perfect my craft.
What one other Queen deserves a shout out from you?
Carrie Ann crow, Frans gender, Marla sinner, Bearberry McQueen, Kiko, Paris ettamol, Gwen heart, Saturn, Alice rabbit, Lucifer, Jessica diamond, Drew lee, Forrest king, Demirti outside, Robyn pills, Reba Martel.
The list goes on and on but there are so many amazing queens kings and things from Scotland that I absolutely adore and are inspired by.
What does the future hold for you?
I mean hopefully just getting on stage soon I am absolutely dying to be back on stage I have so many ideas looks performances ideas for new shows and stuff I’d definitely love to take my one woman show to some other bars and clubs around the country I’ve done a few in Glasgow and I absolutely adore doing them.
