RPDR - Season 13 - Episode 5 Review
Before we jump into this, there are spoilers below if you haven’t watched the episode yet. All the comments below are just my fun opinion, its a TV show don’t get upset if I didn’t like your favourite Queen!
The week of design challenges! It seems the UK and US Queens are in sync, yet the design challenge briefs were very different for both sets.
Before the Season 13 Queens can get to the design challenge the episode starts with a little clash of words from Kandy Muse and Tamisha Iman. Kandy says how Symone is her biggest competition after getting two wins under her belt but Tamisha is having none of it and quickly reminds Kandy that they are all still there too! I get it from both sides though, Kandy is right that currently Symone is the one to beat for a best track record but Tamisha is also correct in that they are all still their. Symone could easily have a bad week and be sent home and lets not forget this show is a marathon not a sprint!
Drama over and a new day starts for the Queens in the werkoom and Ru challenges the Queens to get into quick baby drag for “Baby Got Back”. The hilarious stint sees the Queens dancing it out as babies for a winner of the mini challenge. I would have picked Elliott with 2 T’s but Ru went for La La Ri. Lets be honest though it could have been anyone.
Mini challenge over Ru tells the Queens they will be needing 3 looks for the main stage in the following categories. Those being Mixed Bag / Money Bags and Bag Ball Eleganza! Two the Queens could prepare for before the show but the final look needs to be made by the Queens using the bags provided. Of course a good old snatch and run situation occurs with the Queens are grabbing whatever they can.
During the design making process we see Tamisha give a teaching lesson in ball culture to the other Queens which we were living for! Ru also comes to the werk room to speak to the girls but nothing major happened until the Queens got ready. When they were getting ready the Queens had a frank and honest chat about the BLM movement and how important it is! I will try not to get political but it really does show how awful and unfair America is towards the black community. I mean when the Queens were talking about this / filming this was before the whole capitol takeover hadn't happened! Now comparing the two you just realise how messed up it really is. Lets hope Biden can change some of that during his term.
To the main stage, the Queens brought a total of 36 looks to the main stage so we will go through our top and bottom look for each category. First up, Mixed Bag, now some Queens I think hit the nail on the head and others missed the mark. No one stood out massively over another from my favourites but overall I think it had to be Gottmik for the win! I did also like the look Rose walked but girl stop sticking so much on your arms and shoulders! My least favourite had to be La La Ri. It just seemed a little cheap and not very well thought out.
Second look was Money Bags, another look from home which again some really put some thought and effort into with others missing the mark. Tamisha had such a gorgeous look and really stood out but Tina Burner stole it for me in this category as my favourite. I know everyone lost it over Gottmik including Ru but I wasn't fussed by this look. It was good but reminded me of the look Rose had with the blue which I hated! I also thought the wig looked costume shop bought. If it was anyone else I think they would have been read for that. My least favourite look was from Joey Jay, its the same thing we see every time and I was a little bored of it.
The final look and the one that really mattered the Bag Ball Eleganza look which the Queens created. Some really worked and we saw some brilliant creations. With what the others had… I mean I’m shocked they even walked out of the werkroom like that. I would have outright refused haha. I am surprised they didn't show any clips of the other Queens being like erm excuses me… WTF is that. Anyway my favourite by far was a close call between Elliott / Gottmik / Utica. Elliott’s was so put together for me so credit for that but as it was asked to be a high fashion look I am going to give it to Utica. Despite the creepy child print sleeping bag giving me the creeps. My least favourite was La La Ri and Kandy Muse. I mean Kandy girl, you are so lucky that La La Ri did so poorly or you would be having to apologies to Tamisha and take back what you said about bringing the looks this week. However, La La Ri stole the worst design challenge look of maybe all time haha. Although I must say it did make me laugh that Nicole Byer didn’t like the total mess of her outfit as her whole show is about that ;)
If I had to pick a winner for the best three looks I think I would have actually gone for Utica. Her three were the most put together for me. But its RuPaul’s Drag Race not my Drag Race and Gottmik was picked for the win.
The bottom two ended up being Joey Jay and La La Ri. Although both put up a fight La La Ri didn't just slay, she SLAYED and poor Joey Jay couldn’t do anything to stop it. This ended with you guessed it… Joey Jay being sent home. RIP the trade of the season, I am well and truly gutted that I won’t be seeing that hairy chest every week! I guess Instagram will have to do!
With two episodes about design from the UK and US we can’t wait to put the sewing machines away and see what next week brings for the US and UK Queens!
