Review - RuPaul’s Drag Race: Superstars Mobile Game!
When we got asked if we wanted to review the brand new RuPaul’s Drag Race mobile game early we of course said YES! We already knew the game was going to be as addictive as the TV competition series but when the email was signed off ‘Good luck, and may the best drag queen journalist win!’ we went from reviewer to competitor real quick!
The game started with Ru’s iconic laugh hitting my ears and I knew from that moment that this game was going to be good. One of the best parts of the game is the little details they have added from the TV series. To the runway intro to the drag queen catch phrases. This really helps make the experience of the game and is what’s usually missing when mobile games are made of iconic shows.
First thing you must do in the game is create your avatar look which has a bunch of styles to choose from! These include, skin tone, hair, body shape and more! I will be honest although it was nice to create your human avatar look out of drag it seemed a little pointless as sadly you don’t get a chance to record confessionals. I wouldn't give to much time to this bit as it won’t be long until you are in drag and transformed.
Avatar created the next step is the all important name! Don’t already know yours? I recommend having a little think and picking a good one before rushing ahead as everyone else see’s this on the leaderboard (more on that later). We of course went for Spill the Tea.
It’s now time for your first runway for your chance to get a spot in the competition! Standing there in your plain clothes I thought how the hell am I going to compete. Luckily Mumma Ru then gives you a few drag pieces to get you started on your Drag Race journey. Our first category was ‘Rich Girl Realness’. For each runway there will be a set ‘type’ of clothing you need to wear to hit the criteria and get a higher score. When selecting your clothes these symbols will appear to help you choose the best look. Each symbol for each runway has a different score multiplier next to it, be sure to keep an eye on those if you want to be remembered as a fashion queen darling!
First runway slayed you’re then given the chance by Ru to enter the competition. Joined by Ru in the werkroom he explains all you need to know!
Essentially… Werkstations help produce W.E.R.K (basically XP). You will need these each week so you can prepare for the main challenge or runway theme. In the Werkroom are Werkstations for sewing, wigs, padding, choreography and drag on a dime to help you. These can be upgraded as you go to help earn more XP in less time. Like most game apps you need to be logged in to collect the XP but luckily for us the pit crew are also part of the game. Along the way you can collect Pit Crew members who will stand at your station and collect the XP for you whilst you slay the real world. However, watch out as they don’t last forever.
During your time in the competition you can also earn RuDollas which enable you to buy things from the store. This is key but be careful with your money honey because buying items in the store for a runway theme is sometimes the only way to get ahead! So spend those coins wisely and my advice to you would be to save them for when you need them instead of just spending right away. You of course can use real dollars (or pounds for us in the UK) in exchange for more Rudollas (the game currency like in most mobile games). But don’t fear if you don’t have real cash to spare as there are plenty of free ways to earn them by competing in mini challenges or by watching adverts.
If the main part of the game wasn't addictive enough there is plenty more to keep you hooked, such as special events where Drag Race Queens join for a limited time like Yvie Oddly who appeared during our trial period. Here you can compete to win and earn exclusive prizes.
Know from a Drag Race fan this mobile game really is fantastic and as addictive as you can imagine. If you love the show you will really will love this.
A word of warning though, if you want to beat the best of the best and hit the top of that leaderboard be prepared! The competition is tough and we only managed to get to 11th in the leaderboard and we were really trying.
