Interview - Clementine
Clementine, welcome to Spill the Tea Queen. To start how did you get into drag at the young age of 14!?
It all started watching Drag Race and then going to DragWorld UK, I saw that everyone (not just famous grown men) could take part in the art of drag, practised a lot over time, and realised that it was just my thing!
How did you come up with your name?
Honestly I was stuck in such a rut with my name, I wanted something fun and easy to say, that’s also cute and fun, so it basically ended scrolling through fruits on wikipedia, not the common origin but it works for me.
How would you describe your Drag style?
Anything pastel, a little bit of camp thrown in there, I take massive inspo from 80’s music and 80’s style, very arty and creative; I try to make most of my stuff, and occasionally some spook in there too!
What emoji describes your Drag?
Oo you said one but i’m a greedy drag queen so here’s a few : 🧚🌸🍄✨🍬🎨
Do you feel people don’t take you seriously enough being a young Queen?
It certainly seems like a lot of people don’t see me as a real drag artist and more of a MUA, as I haven’t had a chance to go out and perform with COVID and being underage, but honestly the underestimation means I can wow even more so if they don’t take me seriously- the jokes on them!
Have your family and friends been supportive of you wanting to do Drag?
They have! I mean I lost friends when I came out, but most of my family and friends are really supportive and I couldn’t be more lucky.
On Season 1 of Drag Race UK Scardey Kat got some beef for being a bedroom Queen. Do you mind the term?
I mean i’ve never really thought about it! I have no problem with the phrase because it’s completely true- it’s the only place i’ve ever done drag! But I think just as long as it doesn’t stick with me after covid when I can get out and perform it’s all good with me!
What would you say to any young readers who might be wanting to try Drag but feel they are too young?
Just go for it!! You can never start too young, and just think of all that experience you’ll get. My favourite thing about thinking about auditioning for the race is i’ll be able to say i’ve had 10 years + experience and still be in my 20’s! Now that’s going to intimidate the other artists!!
RuPauls Drag Race has pushed drag into the mainstream however, there is more to it. What one Queen deserves your shout-out?
Oh this is my fave question. For starters - Ru get your shit together! I’m not fussed about drag race US anymore- UK is my love but i KNOW they can do better with casting. But I do believe there going in the right direction with obviously the icons Bimini and Ginny. My fave drag artist at the moment is @milesonastring - an amazing trans male drag artist who’s super talented and a lovely person who deserves all the recognition- go check him out!
Any last shout outs?
Oh trust me I have so many - but here are my fave drag artists at the moment who all deserve all the love and a big follow!
@thesirgin & @traumaqueen114- amazing non binary artist!
@stagnantrivers , @miss_eva_ora , @victoriascone - all amazing AFAB artists!
and some artists I really look up to in the drag scene, @melancholy.x.x.x , @theonlyzodi , @itsjustbones , @itsstarlet and @glitterking!
