RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 Review: Episode 7

In the new episode, the queens are doing a Rusical, 'The Sound of Rusic'! The first challenge begins when they have to pick their roles. The girls are fighting over the roles and Plasma is unhappy as she feels cornered in her role choice. She tries out being a mean girl, standing her ground, using the 'Plane Jane technique', and it works out for her.

Plane Jane, Xunami, and Q have the roles of the mean girls and go around annoying the others when Morphine spills the tea that Xunami has a crush on Plane Jane. Telling a secret like that on TV is really something! Let’s hope Xunami didn’t murder her after seeing the episode air.

Plasma is struggling a little with her role voice now as she raises she will have to bring it through the whole musical while the other girls all have their little moments throughout.

As the girls are releasing the choreography, when Melissa McCarthy randomly enters the building, spilling the drinks she brought and handing out Babybels to the queens. How random is that? She does a little speech and reveals how she started in drag before in a red wig, called Miss Y. See, there have been women doing drag before, it's not a strange thing! Put some more of them on the show, Miss RuPaul! And as quickly as she appears, she disappears again. Some of the girls are struggling a little, Mhi’ya looks a bit stiff and is not able to do her flips now, and Q is giving Frankenstein again. The other girls like to see the 'mean girl' not deliver in the rehearsals as they annoyed them so much earlier.

RuPaul on the main stage is wearing an interesting look, if a contestant on the show would wear that they would surely get sent home.

The Rusical starts, and it’s entertaining; however, it would be nice if they would sing live like in a proper Rusical. On Drag Race UK, the queens have to sing themselves, and it makes sense as that is part of a musical challenge. So why not in the US version?

The runway theme this time is 'Flowers', and the looks are quite mixed. Some of them are quite big and detailed, some are very simple and look like they’ve been bought from Amazon. It is funny to see Q do a look with stilts on her arms as we just saw that a day earlier on UK vs. The World. Plasma wins the challenge; it seems musicals are her thing! Geneva and Mhi’ya are in the bottom two, and to be honest, neither of them delivers. Mhi’ya isn’t doing any of her tricks and jumps, but to be fair, she’s in a gown, but then she takes off her shoes! Never take off your heels in a lip sync, girl!

However, she wins the lip sync and stays while Geneva goes home. With her exit line, she reminds us once more to support local drag and protect queer art, which is a nice touch as it is an important topic.
