RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under - Episode 6
Before we jump into this, there are spoilers below if you haven’t watched the episode yet. All the comments below are just my fun opinion, its a TV show don’t get upset if I didn’t like your favourite Queen!
Another week in Down Under land and the Queens enter the werkroom to rub off Etcetera’s message from the mirror. The Queens then sit down to de-brief and discuss the judges current feedback. As they discuss the feedback some of the Queens voice their frustration in the judges comments (Karen from Finance). Some of the other Queens then suggest that perhaps it’s because the judges know who they are so their Drag has a higher expectation compared to say… Elektra. Elektra rightfully defends herself (I literally sighed as I thought about what I’m about to write…) however, the way Elektra does it just comes across really bitchy and turns me off her personality. It doesn’t seem fun or matter of fact, it just does come across as well as I said bitchy. Anyway… moving on like the Queens do its time for a new day in the werkroom and the Queens are joined by an army of pit crew members for a mini challenge I personally hate.
Although they twisted this weeks challenge of what is the pit crew smuggling down their tight briefs or boxers (from say the UK version where it was literally boxers or brief guessing) to this time where the Down Under Queens have to answer some questions and guess the correct animal smuggled away. I just cringe because again it really pushes this notion (to anti LGBTQ+ people) that gay culture is over sexualised and a bit pervy. It’s like with gay nights or events that insist on go go dancers in skimpy underwear, I just don’t see the need tbh. Anyway let me put my Grandma opinion away for a second and carry on with this review.
Maxi Shield wins the mini challenge which means they get a very special task for the main challenge. That main challenge is the family resemblance make over challenge. For the Down Under Queens to make over… rugby players! Maxi as the winner gets to assign the players to the Queens. Maxi had two options, be an utter cow or play it nice and fair which Maxi did. Paired up the Queens then split off and begin creating their make overs.
Tbh most of the Queens in the make-over stage bar one, couldn’t really walk in heels and hadn’t done Drag before. So when it was time for the main stage I was pleasantly surprised with how the Queens did. For the main stage looks I’m going to rank their makeovers with a score of 10…
Left to right - Kita Mean & Feta Mean - 9.5 / 10 (only knocked off 0.5 of a point as the make up style isn’t my personal taste). Elektra Shock & Riri Action - 6 / 10 - A good job at bringing the looks together with the Alien idea but if there was no alien I don’t see it. Art Simone & Craft Simone 6 / 10 - I thought it was fun and I don’t always like the super identical look but here I think it could have been better. I didn't really get the outfit match I was going to give a 5 / 10 but I liked the cleverness of the name so much I bumped it up a point.
Maxi Shields & Cilla Wet - 6.5 / 10 - literally twins! As good as the fit was for the Queens sadly this look was a little simple and panto which really brought the score down. Scarlett Adams & Sapphire Adams - 8 / 10 - I know people are going to be shocked by this scoring but I stand by it. Scarlett had the hardest person to make over… I mean Scarlett is stick thin and Sapphire has a rugby players body. I think Scarlett wasn't credited enough for making the outfit and was one of my tops this week. Karen from Finance & Debbie from Reception - 8 / 10 - I think this look was fabulous and the names were hilarious. I would have scored the points higher if there was maybe more of a story I could follow on the runway. The story that played out was a little complicated. I think the judges gave a harsh critic here for Karen and if this was Trixie it would have been a totally different story and eaten up!
With that Ru and the judges give their feedback which sees Kita Mean with the win (100% agree). Such a deserved win. It really truly was, Kita smashed this one out of the park. This left Scarlett and Maxi in the bottom which I disagree with. My bottoms would have been Maxi too sadly (although that kills me as I bloody love Maxi) and Elektra Shock. But Ru is the judge and not me and Maxi and Scarlett fight it out to ‘Better the Devil You Know’ by Kylie Minogue with Scarlett coming out on top!
As the season goes on I’m actually getting really gutted as each Queen leaves which is a good sign as my opinions on this spin off weren’t so great at the start. We are very close to the end now and I still think its any of the remaining Queens crown.
